We were there last year, after driving the supercharger cross country.

Its a trip every jeeper should take. Toss your gear in the truck and eat 33 hours of pavement to get to the promised land.

That last shot is like a baby picture to us.... Betty has changed SO much in the last year. But she was still very pretty then.

So we finally get to MOAB after a 6 hour drive from colorado, its 4pm, and we spot Jeremy and Justin of Rock Krawler at the car wash. Our trail ride with RIPP and RK starts at 8 am the next day.

Jeremy's instructions, get on a trail immediatly. They know what we are used to as we come from the same place. The Northeast. They also know that its our first rodeo out there, and we are completely unprepared.

Moab is astounding the first time you go.

So we are not about to cast away advice from RK's ceo. Exhausted, we seek a trail.....

We jump on "Fins' Things", and are immediatly surprised at the difference in mid-west wheeling vs. the north east.

No jagged rocks. You really dont need skid plates out here. (except LCA skids, you always need them)

In the north east your front tire is on one rock, the rear tire is on another. In Moab, all 4 tires are on one rock. You want sticky tires here.

More shots as we crawl around.... Notice the sun is going down? We are about to get caught in the dark on a strange trail MILES from help.

That sounds like it was great and then terrible. I'd freak out lost off road in the desert like that when it gets dark.

No one around, you would have had to camp there. And by camp i mean, sleep in the truck.

It was pretty scary for a few minutes as the sun went down.

When it gets dark in the desert, it gets DARK.

Then, we discovered, the LED lights that were all over Black Betty. We'd never used them before. As you will go to prison in NJ for auxiliary lights.

Flip the switch... Night turned to day.

I can't wait to get out to Moab! I'm curious to see how my 2 door will handle some of these same climbs. Did you see many 2 doors out there with the shorter wheelbase? How did they handle some of these climbing obstacles?

Im going to say your at a disadvantage with the 2 door vs. 4 door in Moab, or any rock crawling really. Your truck will do fine, dont get us wrong. There is nothing out there that you can't do, But there are some places where the long wheel base is more stable.

For instance, on "white knuckle hill" we'll tie a strap to the back of your truck to keep it from going nose over.

I'll find some video of this.

I was holding the strap by myself, you'll be fine! You just need to hire Larry to spot you.

I wouldnt tackle white knuckle hill without larry.

"Larry" is Larry McRae from Poison spyder. The goes over white knuckle hill with no spotter.

The angle of that descent on that last obstacle would be a NIGHTMARE in a 2 door. The extra wheelbase in the 4 door works miracles sometimes.

Agreed.

You will be terrified a lot of the time. A lot of the 2 doors on the trail have stretched wheel bases.

Having perused the pics on these posts, flipped through countless magazines and now with a Rubicon I'm not missing Moab or the EJS one more year! I'm stuck in Afghanistan right now but heading home for good next March/May (2016). Does most everyone camp out? Taking a recon out there next month on vacation and will let everyone know how it is in mid-July through mid-August! If we don't dry up and blow away. LOL

This is the most fun I have ever had in a jeep. I bought one shortly after this trip.

So I am heading to Ouray at the end of August, and given the close proximity to Moab, I am thinking of heading there. I currently do not have a winch, is this going to be an issue for me?

JeepLab

I dont think so. The danger in moab is more rolling over or broken gear, (axle, drive shaft) rather than getting stuck.

You want a buddy jeep to go with you, better to have another truck that can pull out if you lose and axle or drive shaft. I've seen both broken in MOAB.

What kind of bumper do you have on Black Betty. I love the way it looks.
