Box Office: 'Star Wars' Overtakes 'Frozen' With $1.29B

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' also leaps past 'The Avengers' to become Disney's top-grossing film of all time in North America; Quentin Tarantino's revenge Western places a pleasing No. 4 as it rolls out nationwide following an exclusive 70mm run.

Disney's holiday blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens has overtaken Frozen at the worldwide box office, finishing Wednesday with $1.29 billion to move up the list of all-time top-grossing films to No. 8, not accounting for inflation.

Frozen, also from Disney, earned $1.28 billion globally after opening in late 2013.

And in North America, J.J. Abrams' Force Awakens passed another Disney hit, Marvel's The Avengers ($623.4 million), to take the No. 4 spot on the all-time domestic chart, as well as becoming Disney's top-grossing film ever, not accounting for inflation. The Disney and Lucasfilm release earned $28.1 million from 4,134 theaters on Wednesday, putting its domestic total at $629 million after just 13 days in release.

Internationally, Force Awakens grossed another $36.7 million for a foreign haul of $664.1 million. So far, the movie — which doesn't land in China until Jan. 9 — is seeing some of its biggest numbers in Europe. The U.K. leads with a massive $124.6 million, followed by Germany ($70.6 million) and France ($59.2 million).

Other territory totals include $44.1 million in Australia, $40.6 million in Japan, $22.2 million in Mexico, $19.9 million in South Korea and $19.3 million in Russia.

At this rate, Force Awakens is destined to overtake Avatar ($760.5 million) and become the top-grossing film of all time in North America, again not accounting for inflation. It could even achieve the milestone by the end of the holidays.

Elsewhere at the crowded Christmas box office, Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight placed a pleasing No. 4 in North America as it expanded nationwide Wednesday after a promising limited run in 70mm film. The revenge Western, receiving a B CinemaScore, grossed $3.5 million from 1,985 theaters for an early domestic total of $10.2 million for The Weinstein Co.

Hateful Eight hopes to make a strong showing over New Year's weekend and place in the top five.

Daddy's Home stayed safely at No. 2 domestically with $6.7 million from 3,172 locations for a $58.8 million total. The broad comedy, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, is from Paramount and Red Granite Pictures.

Boosted by families, Fox's family offering Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip is holding at No. 3, earning $4.2 million Wednesday from 3,705 theaters for a domestic cume of $52.4 million.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's R-rated comedy, Sisters, continues to prosper thanks to keen interest from females. The Universal title placed No. 5 with an estimated $3.2 million from 2,962 locations for a total $46.8 million.

Among awards contenders opening over the year-end holidays, Fox's Joy, directed by David O. Russell and starring Jennifer Lawrence, came in No. 6 with an estimated $2.6 million from 2,896 theaters for a cume of $25.1 million.

The Big Short, the financial dramedy directed by Adam McKay, followed with $1.9 million from 1,585 locations, a modest footprint. Starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt, The Big Short, earning nearly $22 million to date for Paramount and New Regency, will up its theater count on Jan. 8, the weekend before Oscar nominations and the Golden Globes ceremony.

Will Smith-starrer Concussion, from Sony and Village Roadshow Pictures, placed No. 8 with $1.7 million from 2,841 theaters for a total of of $14 million.

Point Break, Alcon Entertainment's extreme sports extravaganza and loose remake of the 1991 cult classic, continued to falter considering its $100 million budget. Distributed by Warner Bros., the movie came in No. 9 with $1.4 million for a total of $14.4 million.

Opening Wednesday at the specialty box office was Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson's stop-motion animated film, Anomalisa. Paramount is debuting the awards contender in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles.
